The President of Romania will begin consultations on forming a new government on May 14
Romanian President Nicușor Dan will hold official consultations on May 14–15 with the political parties represented in parliament regarding the formation of a new government. The meetings will take place against the backdrop of a political crisis that arose following the resignation of Ilie Bolojan’s cabinet.
This was reported by Digi24.
The head of state is considering four possible scenarios for resolving the situation, including the formation of a minority government centered on the National Liberal Party and the Save Romania Union. Under this scenario, Bolojan’s return to the post of prime minister is not anticipated. Another scenario involves forming a minority government centered on the Social Democratic Party led by Sorin Grindeanu.
The president is also exploring the possibility of forming a political government with a technocrat as prime minister or a fully technocratic cabinet. Nicușor Dan plans to present a roadmap for the future executive branch, which is to be implemented regardless of the chosen format of government. The political crisis in the country began in early May when the Social Democrats left the coalition and expressed a vote of no confidence in the previous government.
The Romanian Parliament passed a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s government by a record margin after representatives of the Social Democratic Party left the coalition. A total of 281 deputies voted for the Cabinet’s resignation, exceeding the required minimum of 233 votes, marking the largest expression of no confidence in the history of Romanian parliamentarianism.
In Romania, seven ministers from the Social Democratic Party simultaneously resigned following the party’s decision to withdraw its support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that despite the political situation, Romania remains on a pro-European course, and key state institutions continue to function stably.
