President Zelensky arrives in Canada for talks on defense support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Calgary, Canada, for talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney on further support for Ukraine in the war against the Russian invasion. This was reported by Asharq Al-Awsat.

Zelensky said that the main topics of the visit would be protecting Ukraine’s skies and preparations for winter. According to him, the sides will also discuss strengthening Ukraine’s resilience, supporting the population, and providing the country with the necessary means for defense.

Air defense and weapons for Ukraine

As the publication notes, Canada and European states are supplying Ukraine with their own weapons and are also purchasing American weapons for Kyiv under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, or PURL, mechanism. According to the Associated Press, under President Donald Trump, the United States stopped transferring weapons to Ukraine free of charge.

The visit is taking place amid Russian air attacks using ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones. Ukrainian officials say that Russia is striking the energy system ahead of winter in an effort to demoralize the civilian population.

Drone attacks from both sides

Zelensky arrived in Calgary on Wednesday night, the day after his flight from Moldova to Norway was delayed because Moldova’s airspace was closed following a drone incursion. The report notes that Romania, Moldova, and other European countries have recorded drone incursions.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the aggressor state, claimed to have allegedly destroyed 448 Ukrainian drones over 13 Russian regions, Ukraine’s Crimea temporarily occupied by Russia, as well as the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Authorities in Russia’s Voronezh region reported that debris from a Ukrainian drone caused a fire in a house, killing one woman and injuring two other people.

For his part, Zelensky reported strikes by Ukrainian forces on eight infrastructure facilities supporting Russia’s war effort, including an oil refinery in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and a port in Dagestan. Ukraine’s Air Force said that Russian forces launched 149 drones overnight, some of them jet-powered. According to local authorities, one person was killed and two others were injured in a Russian morning attack on the Kyiv region.
