Putin denied any involvement in the crash of a drone in Romania
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that he has no idea where the drone that recently crashed in Romania came from.
This was reported by Nexta.
During his speech, the Kremlin leader pretended that he had just learned about the incident, even though his press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, had officially assured journalists of the opposite just a few hours earlier.
The explosion of the drone in the Romanian border town of Galați injured civilians, prompting a strong reaction from NATO and Bucharest.
The Russian leader’s apparent lack of coordination with his own press service suggests an attempt to artificially shift responsibility away from Moscow for the provocation in the Alliance’s airspace.
Putin publicly asked media representatives to provide him with details of the incident.
In doing so, he sought to cast doubt on statements by Western officials, particularly the head of the European Commission, who had responded swiftly to yet another act of Russian aggression.
“I just found out, before entering this hall, that I was informed about some incident allegedly involving our drone,” the Russian dictator stated.
He then began asking journalists what exactly was known about the drone crash in Romania and on what basis it had been identified as Russian.
When one of the journalists present noted that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had made the relevant statement, Putin tried to manipulate the facts, emphasizing her absence from the scene.
“Ms. von der Leyen wasn’t in Romania, was she? She didn’t examine the wreckage of this drone. No one can say what the origin of a particular aircraft is until an examination of that aircraft has been conducted,” claimed the leader of the aggressor country.
He then began recalling past incidents in the Baltic states and Finland, baselessly accusing Ukraine of violating the borders of European states.
“The initial reaction was exactly the same as it is now in Romania. ‘Oh no, the Russians are coming, the Russians are attacking.’ Then, shortly thereafter, it turned out that this had nothing to do with Russian aircraft; rather, these were drones of Ukrainian origin that had strayed off course, either due to electronic warfare or for some other reason—perhaps because of technical flaws—and had flown there and crashed. In this case, I think that this is most likely exactly the situation we’re dealing with. Let them hand it over to us; we’ll conduct an objective investigation, and only then will we assess what happened,” Putin added.
However, four hours before this statement, Dmitry Peskov provided completely different information, confirming that the Russian leadership was aware of the situation.
Responding to journalists’ questions about whether the dictator had been briefed on the situation in Romania, the Kremlin spokesperson reacted with characteristic irony.
“What do you think? Did they hide it?” Peskov said, effectively refuting his boss’s subsequent claims of allegedly being completely unaware of the situation.
