Ex-minister’s spokesperson urges Council of Churches and House of Chiefs to speak on freedoms — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Yaw Opoku Mensah, spokesperson for former Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum, has called on the Christian Council of Ghana and the National House of Chiefs to speak out on what he described as the weakening of democratic freedoms in the country. As MyJoyOnline reports, he considers both institutions important moral voices that should respond when citizens’ rights and freedoms are under threat.

Claims of arrests of dissenters

Opoku Mensah expressed concern that, according to him, the authorities are resorting to the arrests of people who express dissent. In his view, such actions raise questions about the protection of democratic freedoms.

He also stated that the silence of these institutions should not always be regarded as neutrality. The spokesperson questioned their role if fears of being accused of supporting a particular political force prevent them from speaking out about alleged abuses of state power.

Call for government accountability

According to Opoku Mensah, any government must be accountable regardless of the political party in power. He stressed that human rights do not belong to political forces, but to Ghanaian citizens.

He also warned that the country’s democracy could face serious problems if institutions called upon to be the nation’s moral conscience do not speak out when necessary. Opoku Mensah called on the Christian Council of Ghana and the National House of Chiefs to demonstrate moral courage and speak when it matters.
