Record-breaking heat could hit the Earth as early as 2027 — The Guardian

The UN’s World Meteorological Organization has warned that there is a high probability of a new global temperature record being set as early as 2030. According to scientists’ forecasts, 2027 could become the hottest year on record due to a combination of global warming and the El Niño climate phenomenon.

According to The Guardian, a report by the UK Met Office for the WMO states that there is an 86% probability that one of the years between 2026 and 2030 will exceed the temperature record set in 2024.

Experts also estimate a 75% probability that the average global temperature over the five-year period will exceed pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5°C.

Scientists explain that an additional risk factor will be the return of El Niño—a natural climate phenomenon that raises atmospheric temperatures by warming the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The probability of its occurrence in late 2026 is estimated at 96%.

The UN emphasizes that emissions from fossil fuels continue to accelerate the climate crisis, triggering heat waves, droughts, floods, and storms around the world.

UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell stated that the current heatwave in Europe and Asia is a stark reminder of the consequences of global warming, and that the transition to clean energy remains the key way to avoid even more catastrophic events.

As a reminder, the previous owners—Odarka and Hrytsyk—returned on April 5–6 to the nest in the Pyriatyn National Nature Park, where a new pair of storks—Kvitka and Lel—had formed on April 2.
