Republican leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives unexpectedly canceled a vote on a resolution to limit President Donald Trump’s military campaign against Iran. The decision was prompted by the risk that the resolution would pass due to a lack of Republican support.
The vote, which was scheduled to take place overnight Kyiv time, could have been the first successful resolution by the U.S. Congress condemning Donald Trump’s military actions against Iran.
Democrats had previously attempted to pass similar measures on multiple occasions, but all attempts had failed.
House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers stated that the vote had to be canceled due to the absence of a significant number of Republicans.
It was precisely the absence of Republican representatives that could have allowed Democrats to pass the bill.
“We went from losing by a single vote to a tie last week, and tonight they pulled this cowardly retreat,” said Democratic Congressman Jared Gaffman.
Now Republicans plan to return to this issue after the week-long Memorial Day holiday in the U.S.
At the same time, Axios notes that the vote would be largely symbolic, as Donald Trump could veto the bill.
Although most Republicans support Trump’s military campaign, concern is growing within the party over the prolongation of the conflict without formal congressional approval.
Some Republican Party representatives point out that the 60-day period stipulated by the U.S. Authorization for Use of Military Force Act has already expired. The law requires the withdrawal of U.S. troops if Congress has not approved their deployment.
However, the White House claims that this provision does not apply because a ceasefire has been reached between the U.S. and Iran.
Earlier, the U.S. president announced that negotiations with Tehran had reached the final stage, warning that he was prepared to launch new military strikes if no compromise was reached.
Iran has outlined sixdemands for a peace deal with the U.S., according to Sky News.
As a reminder, Washington presented Tehran with five conditions for resuming dialogue, including the transfer of 400 kilograms of enriched uranium to the U.S. In response, the U.S. is also insisting on a series of additional restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program and a cessation of hostilities.
