Russia summoned the Romanian ambassador following the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanța

On Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Romania’s ambassador to Russia, Cristian Istrate.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, the diplomat was summoned to be informed of measures in response to Romania’s closure of the Russian Consulate General in Constanța and the declaration of the Russian consul general as persona non grata.

Bucharest’s decision was made following an incident in late May, when a Russian attack drone struck a residential building in Galați, causing destruction and a fire. According to the investigation, the drone may have been carrying at least 30 kg of explosives; two people were injured.

In Romania, this incident is being called the most serious violation of the country’s airspace by Russian drones to date.

This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

In late May, Romanian President Nicușor Dan officially announced the closure of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Constanța.
