Russia says US missile system facilities in Norway could become targets

Russia, as an aggressor state, condemned the deployment of a US missile system in Norway and said that it worsens the prospects for dialogue between Moscow and Washington on strategic nuclear stability. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post, citing a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry

The Russian ministry claims that the system based on Mk-41 launchers poses a threat to Russia. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, such launchers can be used to launch various missiles, including Tomahawk cruise missiles.

The Russian ministry said that missiles launched from such launchers could allegedly strike a significant part of Russia’s European territory, including Moscow. It also claims that the deployment of US ground-based intermediate-range missiles in Europe worsens the conditions for constructive dialogue with the United States on strategic issues.

Statement on possible targets

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it would pay special attention to the locations of US missile systems, as well as their command and control centers. The ministry stated that in the event of a military conflict, these facilities would become targets.

US media previously reported that Washington delivered a new launcher system to Norway in August. The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that dialogue between Moscow and Washington on strategic stability had been curtailed under the previous US administration, and called the current administration’s plans to hold multilateral talks involving China unrealistic.
