Rutte assessed the prospects for negotiations with Russia

Ukraine is showing success on the battlefield, but that does not mean Russia is ready for genuine peace talks. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the allies must continue to strengthen Ukraine so that, when the time comes, it can approach potential negotiations from the strongest possible position.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that Ukraine’s successes in the war against Russia have not yet brought the start of genuine peace talks any closer. He made these remarks in an interview with the Financial Times, commenting on the prospects for ending the war and continued support for Kyiv.

According to Rutte, aid to Ukraine remains one of the Alliance’s top priorities. NATO does not plan to change this course and will continue to support the Ukrainian state. At the same time, the secretary general suggested that “one fine day” Russia will eventually agree to sit down at the negotiating table. “One fine day, Russia will agree to sit down at the negotiating table. It is very important that Ukraine be as strong as possible at that moment,” Rutte emphasized.

That is precisely why, he said, the allies must continue to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and assist it with weapons, funding, and other forms of support. The Secretary-General also noted that the Ukrainian military continues to achieve significant results on the front lines. According to him, even U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged this during their recent meeting at the White House.

However, Rutte believes that even the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ successes have not yet compelled the Kremlin to change its position. “The fact that Ukraine is making progress does not mean that Russia will willingly participate in the peace process,” the NATO Secretary General noted.

Thus, NATO believes that the allies’ main task now remains the further strengthening of Ukraine. According to Rutte, only a strong position by Kyiv can create the conditions under which Moscow will ultimately be forced to agree to substantive negotiations on ending the war. This was reported by the Financial Times.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte of misrepresenting the country’s role during the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. The Alliance leader’s statement sparked a political scandal in Italy and drew a wave of criticism from the opposition.
