Russia may have spied on Slovaks using cameras on the Ministry of Internal Affairs building

Russia may have gained remote access to cameras installed on the building of the Slovak Ministry of the Interior and used them to monitor citizens and roads in the country.

This was stated by Michal Šimečka, leader of the Slovak opposition party “Progressive Slovakia.” According to him, the cameras may have had a built-in mechanism allowing remote access by Russian authorities, which poses a serious threat to national security.

The opposition leader called the situation a “huge security failure” and urged Prime Minister Robert Fico and President Peter Pellegrini to respond to the scandal. The opposition is also demanding the resignation of Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eshtok.

According to Denník N, opposition representative Peter Bátor obtained information about the equipment. He claims that the cameras contained a module and administrator rights that cannot be changed, and that phone numbers from St. Petersburg were linked to the system.

Bátor also stated that remote access could potentially have been used not only to retrieve images from the cameras but also to access Ministry of the Interior data.

The Slovak opposition is already preparing a criminal complaint regarding the installation of Russian equipment at one of the country’s key facilities. Robert Fico has not yet commented on the situation.
