Russia has increased gas production at Arctic LNG 2 to a record high
The Russian Arctic LNG 2 project, which is subject to sanctions, set a record for gas production rates in July and August. This was made possible by the expansion of a shadow fleet of tankers, which allows for increased exports.
According to a source familiar with the situation, natural gas production at the facility owned by PJSC Novatek exceeded 27 million cubic meters per day in July and August. This is nearly twice as much as in August 2025.
This increase in production likely indicates a rise in liquefied natural gas (LNG) output, as the plant has more tankers to transport the fuel to China—the sole buyer of its sanctioned cargoes.
The plant, located above the Arctic Circle, plays a key role in Russia’s plans to triple LNG production. Western sanctions, imposed after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, have pushed back the achievement of this goal to 2030. In response, Russia has formed a shadow fleet.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg, exports from this facility reached historic monthly highs—over 500,000 metric tons in both July and August. According to the converter on Novatek’s website, this amounts to approximately 700 million cubic meters per month.
