Russians are flocking to Georgia amid rumors of a new mobilization

Tens of thousands of Russian citizens have begun traveling to Georgia amid rumors of a possible new wave of mobilization this fall. The Russian Federal Customs Service reported a record number of passengers crossing the “Verkhniy Lars” border crossing.

On August 15 and 16, more than 19,000 people crossed the border into Georgia each day, and on August 18, more than 20,000. The Russian Customs Service noted that these figures significantly exceed those for the same periods in previous years.

Eyewitnesses report major traffic jams on the Russian side of the border—vehicles are reportedly moving at a speed of about 50 meters per hour. “Verkhniy Lars” is the only land border crossing between Russia and Georgia.

Significant congestion at the border also occurred in September 2022 after Vladimir Putin announced a mobilization, when tens of thousands of Russians tried to leave the country.

This is reported by Russian propaganda media.

As a reminder, Putin has called for increased support for the war among Russians.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin instructed the command of the Russian Navy to respond “resolutely” to attempts by Western countries to detain Russian tankers. He made this statement during a meeting with Russian fleet commanders.
