Russians have cut their spending on clothing to a record low due to the economic slowdown

Russian consumers are increasingly cutting back on clothing and footwear, postponing purchases as the economic situation worsens.

This is reported by Kommersant, citing data from the Fashion Consulting Group.

By the end of 2025, Russians’ share of spending on clothing and footwear had fallen to 7%—the lowest figure in at least the last 11 years.

According to analysts’ estimates, clothing sales in volume terms fell by 8–10% year-over-year last year. At the same time, the market’s monetary volume grew by 6%—to 3.94 trillion rubles—solely due to inflation.

Compared to 2014, Russians’ share of spending on updating their wardrobes has decreased by more than a third.

Infoline CEO Mikhail Burmistrov stated that 2025 was one of the most challenging years for the retail market, and negative trends are likely to persist this year as well.

According to him, sales at the largest non-food retail chains fell by 7% in monetary terms and by more than 10% in physical volume.

Raiffeisenbank analysts attribute the decline in consumer activity to a slowdown in real income growth due to higher taxes, mandatory payments, and the general economic slowdown.

Russia changed its polling methodology, and Putin’s approval rating immediately rose.

Putin began talking about “ending the war” due to serious problems both at home and on the front lines.
