Russian intelligence agencies are stealing personal data from Moldovan citizens on a massive scale
Moldova’s Information and Security Service (SIB) has discovered that Russian intelligence agencies are collecting personal data from Moldovan citizens on a massive scale.
The main goal of this large-scale operation is to use the confidential information in cross-border fraud schemes.
The agency’s press service officially reported this, emphasizing the significant increase in threats to the country’s cybersecurity and financial sector.
According to Moldovan counterintelligence, hostile forces are using several different channels to populate their databases.
Russian agents purchase illegally leaked information on the dark web and carry out targeted hacking attacks on private servers.
In addition, they are actively exploiting the digital archives of the pro-Russian criminal group “Shor,” which has been collecting profiles of its supporters for years.
The agency provided a detailed description of the structure and content of the information that fell into the hands of foreign malicious actors.
“An analysis of the available information indicates the existence of detailed databases containing first and last names, email addresses, phone numbers, residential addresses, as well as copies of identity documents,” the SIB stated.
Experts are currently compiling an exact list of those affected.
Subsequently, the stolen data sets are transferred to international criminal networks to carry out coordinated financial fraud schemes.
Fraudsters use this information to steal funds from citizens’ bank cards, as well as to extort cash through social engineering techniques.
The security service links this criminal activity to the Kremlin’s overall strategy to destabilize European states.
Representatives of the security agency emphasized that such cyberattacks are part of external pressure on the republic’s leadership.
“These actions are not isolated incidents but are part of a hybrid war aimed at undermining national stability. The goal of such attacks is to create a sense of danger and mistrust in society,” the SIB emphasized.
