A Russian Su-57 flew to Egypt without external fuel tanks
A Russian Su-57 fighter jet flew to Egypt with a stopover. During the flight, the aircraft used fuel tanks located in its internal weapon bays.
A Russian Su-57 fighter jet flew to an international airshow in Egypt using fuel tanks installed in internal weapon bays instead of external drop tanks, according to The Defense Blog.
According to the company, the Su-57E flew to the international air show in El Alamein with one stopover. After landing, the aircraft still had enough fuel for a flight of approximately 1,000 km.
The next day, this reserve allowed the fighter to perform a demonstration flight. Rostec and UAC described it as comparable to a full-scale combat sortie.
External fuel tanks are typically used by fighter jets during long-distance flights. However, they increase the aircraft’s drag and radar cross-section, which contradicts its low-observability design.
According to Rostec, the use of internal tanks makes it possible to increase the flight range without such a trade-off.
“The ability to use insertable fuel tanks inside the weapon bays instead of external pylons is fully in line with the concept of a fifth-generation aircraft,” the company said in a statement.
Rostec also stated that this solution preserves the aircraft’s aerodynamics and provides a significant reserve of flight range.
According to UAC, the Su-57E is the export version of the Russian Su-57 fighter jet. The company describes it as an aircraft with low observability, high maneuverability, and a wide range of compatible weapons.
The Russian side states that deliveries of the Su-57E to foreign customers have already begun, but does not specify which countries have received the aircraft or in what quantities.
This year’s airshow in El Alamein took place from September 8 to 10. For the Su-57E, this was its second appearance in Egypt following its participation in the event in 2024.
The Russian aircraft was also displayed alongside U.S. Air Force and Texas National Guard aircraft, as well as Chinese military aircraft.
