Romania helped Moldova restore power supplies following Russia's attack on the Odesa region
On March 24, 2026, Romanian Ambassador to Moldova Cristian Leon-Țurcanu announced operational support for Chișinău following the shutdown of the “Isaccea–Vulcănești” high-voltage power line.
His remarks were reported by News Maker.
The failure of the main electricity import channel occurred on the evening of March 23 during a massive attack by Russian drones on energy facilities in the Odesa region. Bucharest activated alternative supply routes, specifically four 110 kV power lines, which ensured that Moldovan citizens had access to electricity and drinking water.
The diplomat emphasized Romania’s determination to protect the daily lives of Moldova’s population from the consequences of Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine. The reserve capacity utilized had already proven its effectiveness during the partial blackout on January 31, 2026. Thanks to joint efforts and the engagement of additional networks, prolonged disruptions to the country’s critical infrastructure on this side of the Prut River were avoided.
On the evening of March 23, a cross-border power line connecting the power grids of Moldova and Romania went offline due to Russian strikes on Ukraine. Moldovan authorities describe the situation as “very difficult,” and the state of the power grid remains unstable.
