Romania scrambled F-18 fighter jets in response to a Russian attack on the Odesa region
On the night of August 31, an air raid alert was issued in Romania and military aircraft were scrambled due to a possible threat of a violation of the country’s airspace during a Russian attack on the southern part of the Odesa region.
At around 11:30 p.m. on August 31, the Romanian Army’s radar systems detected two aerial targets. They were located approximately 24 km northeast of Vilkovo.
Due to the potential threat to Romania’s border regions, an air raid alert was declared.
To monitor the situation, two Spanish F-18 fighter jets—operating as part of a NATO mission—and a Romanian Air Force helicopter were scrambled.
Romanian and allied military forces continued to monitor the air situation in the border area.
The pilots observed explosions over Ukrainian territory; however, according to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, no violations of Romanian airspace were recorded.
The air alert for border areas was lifted at 1:05 a.m.
Thus, the Russian attack on southern Odesa Oblast triggered heightened readiness among Romanian and allied forces; however, no drones or other aerial targets crossed into Romanian airspace.
