Romania is calling on the EU to provide greater protection against Russian drones
Romania is calling on the European Union to redeploy its defense capabilities to counter Russian drones violating the airspace of countries on the EU’s eastern flank.
This was stated by Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruca ahead of the May 12 meeting of the EU Security Council, according to “European Truth.”
“While these Russian attacks are not felt in the same way in the center of the continent as they are on the periphery, we are facing a situation where drones enter European, NATO, and Romanian airspace several times a month,” Miruta said.
He emphasized that Russian drones are violating not only Romania’s airspace—“this is happening across the entire eastern flank.”
“It is quite clear that within the European Union, we must regroup our forces and capabilities to reduce this type of violation… The capabilities that countries possess must be regrouped to combat these Russian drones,” the Romanian minister urged.
Radu Miruca reported that since the beginning of 2026, 14 drones have violated Romania’s airspace.
“While such risks do not exist in the center of the continent, they do exist on the periphery, and there are certain capabilities in the center of the continent that could be transferred to the periphery to protect the continent,” he reiterated.
As a reminder, debris from a Russian drone was found in Romania on April 25. Overall, during the years of full-scale war, Russian drones have repeatedly crashed on the Romanian bank of the Danube or violated the country’s airspace.
Against the backdrop of regular incidents involving Russian drones crashing, Romania officially announced the deepening of military-technical cooperation with Kyiv.
It is also known that French and Romanian military personnel have taken over airspace security duties for the Baltic states.
