The U.S. Senate has approved a bill imposing severe sanctions against Russia
A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has agreed on the final text of a bill imposing new sanctions against Russia. The bill will be put to a procedural vote in the Senate in the near future.
According to Bloomberg, the bill expands the U.S. president’s authority to exert economic pressure on countries that purchase Russian energy resources or help Moscow circumvent sanctions.
The bill provides for the imposition of additional tariffs on the largest importers of Russian oil and gas, as well as on countries that facilitate the circumvention of energy restrictions. In addition, it extends the Iran Sanctions Act through 2031, maintaining the mechanism for secondary sanctions.
The bill also allows for the imposition of a blanket tariff of 500% on Russian goods imported into the U.S., as well as additional tariffs of up to 100% on the largest buyers of Russian energy resources. Meanwhile, the president’s new powers will remain in effect for five years.
Following the Senate vote, the bill must be considered by the House of Representatives. Since members of Congress have already left for their August recess, final passage of the bill is not expected until September at the earliest.
