US Senate blocks Democrats’ resolution on report on West Bank violence — The Hill

The US Senate did not support Democrats’ attempt to bring up for consideration a resolution that would have required the administration of President Donald Trump to submit a report on violence and human rights violations in the West Bank. This was reported by The Hill.

The procedural motion to consider the document did not receive the required number of votes: 47 senators voted in favor and 51 against. Republicans blocked the initiative, although Republican Senator Rand Paul supported it. The only Democrat to vote against it was Senator John Fetterman.

What the resolution provided for

The initiative was led by Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, together with Senators Tim Kaine and Bernie Sanders. The document stipulated that the US State Department would have to provide a report on cases of violence by Israel against US citizens in the West Bank. If such a report was not submitted, it was proposed that aid to Israel be suspended.

Before the vote, Van Hollen said that nine US citizens had died in the West Bank in a little over four years. According to him, Israeli settlers or members of the Israeli security forces were involved in their deaths, and no one had been held accountable.

Statements by the initiative’s authors

Tim Kaine said in the Senate that he had heard from US military personnel about violence in the West Bank that, according to him, involved both Israelis and members of the Israeli security forces or reservists. He also referred to reports by Israeli media and human rights organizations about attacks on Palestinian communities for which, according to him, there had been no accountability.

Bernie Sanders, who proposed a similar resolution on violence in Gaza in January 2024, called for those responsible for violence in both Gaza and the West Bank to be held accountable.
