Sweden has warned of the risk of a Russian attack on NATO in the coming years — Bloomberg
Sweden believes that Russia could pose a military threat to NATO countries much sooner than previously anticipated. This is stated in a new report by the country’s parliamentary defense committee.
The document notes that although the Russian army has suffered significant losses in the war against Ukraine, a number of Russia’s key military capabilities remain largely intact. In particular, this applies to aviation, the navy, long-range strike capabilities, and the ability to wage hybrid warfare.
According to Swedish experts, Moscow is already capable of conducting a limited military operation outside Ukraine. The decisive factor may not be military readiness, but rather the Kremlin’s political assessment of the international situation’s favorability.
The report also highlights the strengthening of Russia’s military presence near NATO borders. In particular, Russia is forming new units in the Leningrad Military District and building up forces on the Kola Peninsula and in the Arctic.
Separately, the authors of the document noted the growing uncertainty in relations between Europe and the U.S., which also influences the assessment of security risks.
