Greek air defense forces intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles

On Thursday, March 19, 2026, a Greek Patriot battery deployed in Saudi Arabia successfully intercepted two ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory.

Reuters reports this.

According to Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, the targets of the attack were oil refineries and energy infrastructure facilities in the kingdom. The minister emphasized the critical importance of protecting oil facilities for regional stability, without disclosing the exact location of the interception.

This incident marked the first combat use of the Patriot system by Greek personnel since the mission began. The battery and its crew have been stationed in Saudi Arabia since 2021 under a bilateral agreement to assist in the protection of strategic facilities. A representative of the Greek Ministry of Defense confirmed the success of the operation and the professionalism of the crew operating the anti-aircraft missile system.
