Joint Rail Baltica tender for regional trains receives no acceptable bids
In Estonia, a joint tender by the Baltic passenger operators Elron, Vivi and LTG Link for the procurement of regional trains for Rail Baltica received no proposals meeting the requirements by the deadline. This was reported by ERR News.
Six manufacturers registered
Elron management board member Märt Ehrenpreis said that interest in the procurement was substantial: six train manufacturers registered to participate in the tender. However, no application meeting the requirements of the joint procurement was received by the deadline.
According to Ehrenpreis, two manufacturers sent questions and comments on the technical requirements and contract terms until the final days of the procedure. After reviewing the feedback received, the tender documentation will be clarified and a new tender will be announced. The next procedure is expected to take less time, as the main part of the procurement work has already been completed.

Up to 20 trains for the new track
Operators in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania plan to purchase a total of up to 20 regional trains for the Rail Baltica infrastructure, which is under construction and will have the European standard track gauge of 1,435 millimetres. The trains must be suitable for this track and have a maximum speed of up to 200 kilometres per hour.
Estonia plans to procure five trains, with an option to increase the order to seven. Latvia will be able to purchase up to five trains, and Lithuania up to eight. The tender was announced on March 18, and applications were accepted until noon on September 8, 2026. The joint procurement is being conducted to ensure the trains' compatibility with Rail Baltica infrastructure and uninterrupted cross-border connections.
