Over the past 20 years, global tobacco consumption has decreased by approximately 30%.
This was announced by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"Since the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control came into force, global tobacco consumption has fallen by a third," the WHO press service quoted Ghebreyesus as saying.
He noted that the downward trend in tobacco consumption continues in 140 countries.
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was signed in 2003 and entered into force in 2005.
It is worth noting that Swedenwas the first country in the world to reduce daily smoking to less than 5%.
