US ready to work with Ghana on reparatory justice — MyJoyOnline

The United States has officially stated its readiness to work with Ghana on reparatory justice, although it had previously voted against the relevant UN resolution. Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this in New York, United States, during a high-level event organized on September 23 by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, MyJoyOnline reports.

Washington’s position

According to Ablakwa, Washington sent Ghana an official message expressing its readiness to begin joint work toward building a fairer world. The minister stressed that the initiative promoted by Ghana is not intended to divide states, but should contribute to healing and reconciliation.

The United States was one of three countries that voted against the UN resolution initiated by Ghana and adopted in March 2026. The document was supported by 123 states, while another 52 countries abstained.

Return of cultural heritage

Ablakwa also described the return of African cultural artifacts as an important first step toward implementing the principles of reparatory justice. According to him, Ghana is seeking the return of items held in museums and private collections in Europe and the United States, as they are an integral part of African identity, culture, and heritage.

The minister noted France, Germany, and the Netherlands, which have publicly declared their readiness to return African artifacts, and called on other countries to follow this example. After the UN resolution was adopted, Ghana focused on practical steps, including the restitution of cultural heritage and the development of legal and policy mechanisms.
