US to send new military contingent to Estonia soon — ERR News

The United States will soon send a new military contingent to Estonia. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated this, ERR News reports.

Rotation of US forces

According to Tsahkna, the United States informed Tallinn that, following a review of troop rotations, US forces would remain in Estonia. The minister noted that the new rotation would arrive soon but did not specify a timeframe.

The statement came after the main part of the US unit stationed in Estonia left the country at the beginning of summer. In July, Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur said that a new US contingent would arrive soon.

Security of NATO's eastern flank

Tsahkna said that Washington had assured Estonia that there were no reasons for concern regarding the region's security. According to him, Tallinn presented arguments for the need for the continued presence of US troops in the Baltic states and Poland to ensure stability, peace, and deterrence.

The Estonian foreign minister also said that the presence of US troops in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland is a signal to Russia not to consider the possibility of aggressive actions. Estonia, he said, is ready to cover the costs of allied troops' presence if necessary and is allocating 5.4% of GDP to defence this year.

This week, Lithuania's leadership also announced the arrival in the country of a new US unit numbering about 1,000 service members. The United States continues to review the deployment of its forces in Europe, which may lead to other changes in the military presence on the continent.
