The U.S. is in no hurry to extend the trade truce with China — Reuters

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is in no hurry to extend the trade “truce” with China, which is set to expire in November.

This was stated by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the G7 finance ministers’ meeting.

“I think we’re in no rush to extend this. The situation is stable,” Bessent said.

According to him, Washington believes that Beijing is generally adhering to the agreements, although it is not fully fulfilling its obligations regarding critical minerals.

“China has performed satisfactorily, but not excellently, in terms of fulfilling its commitments regarding critical minerals. That is why we are meeting with them again,” noted the head of the U.S. Treasury Department.

Bessent also suggested that China might agree to a return to previous U.S. tariff rates if new tariffs are not raised.

It is expected that Chinese leader Xi Jinping may visit Washington in September to meet with Trump at the White House.
