The U.S. has eased sanctions against airlines linked to Iran's IRGC
The United States has lifted some of the sanctions restrictions on airlines and organizations linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The easing of restrictions applies to the air transport sector.
According to media reports, Washington’s decision involves lifting a number of restrictions on companies that were previously subject to sanctions due to their ties to the Iranian military-political organization.
This move may be part of broader agreements between the U.S. and Iran, though details regarding the reasons for and further implications of the sanctions relief have not yet been disclosed.
The U.S. has lifted some sanctions against Iran
According to a statement on the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s website, sanctions related to Iran have been lifted.
This was announced on August 5.
The U.S. is lifting sanctions on organizations affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps regarding:
two aircraft,
three airlines.
Specifically, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury has lifted counterterrorism sanctions against the Iraqi carrier Fly Baghdad Airlines and two of its Boeing 737 aircraft.
The airline was sanctioned in January 2024 for allegedly assisting IRGC-Quds Force by transporting weapons and fighter jets to Syria and Lebanon for Hezbollah and Kata’ib Hezbollah.
The Treasury Department emphasized that this is an administrative decision and does not represent a change in policy toward Iran or the IRGC.
The airline’s CEO remains on the sanctions list.
