The U.S. has appointed a new chargé d'affaires for Yemen

The United States has appointed Neil Gop as the new Chargé d'Affaires for Yemen. He has become the highest-ranking U.S. diplomat responsible for the U.S. mission's activities in that country.

Neil Hop will coordinate Washington’s diplomatic engagement with Yemen’s internationally recognized government

His responsibilities will also include implementing the foreign policy priorities of U.S. President Donald Trump and the initiatives of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“As the U.S.’s top diplomat for Yemen, he will work to advance President Trump’s key priorities and Secretary of State Rubio’s diplomatic efforts in close partnership with the government of the Republic of Yemen,” the U.S. diplomatic mission stated.

One of the new mission chief’s main areas of focus will be safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, which is of strategic importance for international trade and has recently remained an area of heightened security risks.

In addition, the U.S. diplomatic mission will work to prevent the region from becoming a hotbed of terrorist activity, as well as to strengthen the security of U.S. partner nations.

Neil Hop is a career diplomat with 24 years of experience in public service. Throughout his career, he has held various positions at the U.S. Department of State and other federal agencies.

The U.S. State Department announced the personnel decision, according to Al Arabiya.

Earlier, the Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi group announced the immediate imposition of a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia and warned of its readiness for a large-scale escalation. This was reported on a Telegram channel by Yemeni Armed Forces spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Sari.

Saudi Arabia is preparing for a major military operation against the Yemeni Houthis, which may include naval operations and a possible ground offensive.
