U.S. halts Patriot missile deliveries to Switzerland amid payment disputes

Switzerland ordered Patriot missiles several years ago, but the United States declared it could not deliver them. After Switzerland suspended payments, the U.S. seized 100 million Swiss francs previously paid for F-35 fighters, which were also delayed, and demanded additional funds. By the end of the year, Switzerland had to transfer tens of millions of francs to cover alleged underpayments.

Werner Salzmann, a member of the Swiss National Council from the SVP party and security expert, expressed outrage at the situation, stating, "It is outrageous when we suspend payments and the money is just redirected." Meanwhile, the U.S. notified its allies about possible disruptions in weapons deliveries to Ukraine, including Patriot systems, due to a military operation involving Iran.

This decision by the U.S. risks undermining the program through which allies purchase American weaponry to supply Ukraine, an essential aspect of bolstering the country's defense capabilities.

Switzerland has traditionally maintained a stance of military neutrality, but its acquisition of advanced air defence systems and fighter jets reflects an intent to strengthen its defense potential. The U.S. remains a leading arms supplier and key ally within NATO and other partnerships.

In conclusion, this situation creates tension between Switzerland and the U.S. and raises doubts about the stability of critical arms deliveries to Ukraine. This issue may affect future defense procurement agreements among allies.

Looking ahead, it is expected that both sides will seek compromise solutions to avoid prolonged delays and ensure continuous support for Ukraine amid ongoing security challenges.
