The U.S. and Poland will take an important step toward a new base
On September 10–11, an American delegation will be in Poland to inspect potential sites for a permanent U.S. military base. Negotiations are already underway, and Polish officials say the next 48 hours will be crucial for the future U.S. military presence in the country.
On Thursday and Friday, September 10 and 11, an American delegation will arrive in Poland. Its representatives are scheduled to inspect several potential sites where permanent U.S. military forces could be stationed in the future. The head of the team, who is working on behalf of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset and conducting negotiations with the Polish side, is already in Poland.
According to Polish Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarniecka, discussions are currently focused on the possibility of establishing a permanent U.S. military base. She clarified that western Poland is among the options being considered. According to Polish officials, this region is currently one of the main options for stationing U.S. forces.
Poland Calls the Next 48 Hours Critical
Sobkowiak-Czarniecka called the next two days crucial for Polish-American relations. “The next 48 hours will be decisive for Polish-American relations,” she said.
This is not just about the potential base itself. Warsaw is interested in a long-term strengthening of the U.S. military presence on its territory. The parties must determine which locations would be suitable for such a deployment and what conditions are necessary for it. However, no final decision has yet been made regarding the construction or opening of a new base. The current stage involves negotiations and the evaluation of potential sites.
The idea of a U.S. base has been under discussion for several years
Poland has been discussing the possibility of a permanent U.S. military base since 2018. At that time, Polish President Andrzej Duda proposed that the United States strengthen its military presence in the country. In June 2026, the Polish government moved to a more formal stage. A resolution was passed that launched the process of establishing a permanent U.S. military base in Poland.
Warsaw makes no secret of the fact that it wants to see more U.S. troops in the country. In July, Polish authorities also reported on negotiations with the U.S. regarding the long-term deployment of U.S. forces and the expected return of the U.S. contingent to a level of about 10,000 troops.
What Might Change
If the parties agree to establish a permanent base, this will be another step toward strengthening the U.S. military presence on NATO’s eastern flank. For Poland, this will mean an increase in the U.S. military presence and stronger security guarantees. For the U.S., it would mean additional opportunities to station troops, equipment, and infrastructure closer to NATO’s eastern border.
For now, however, it is too early to speak of a specific base or its exact location. The American delegation is only assessing potential sites, and negotiations between Washington and Warsaw are ongoing. This was reported by representatives of the Polish Ministry of National Defense.
In the Polish town of Raszyn, some local residents concluded that the blue-and-yellow parking spaces near the school had been designated specifically for Ukrainians. This sparked a heated discussion on social media, and local authorities were forced to explain the actual purpose of the markings.
