The U.S. will allocate $100 million for the restoration of the Chernobyl shelter

The United States plans to allocate $100 million toward the restoration of the new safe confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The funds will be used for the repair and maintenance of the protective structure.

This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal on Telegram.

"The U.S. will allocate $100 million for the repair of the Chernobyl NPP containment structure, which was damaged by a Russian drone. [...] I am grateful to the U.S. State Department, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the American delegation that worked with us in Kyiv, and the entire Administration for their significant contribution to strengthening radiation safety in Europe," Shmyhal wrote.

He noted that approximately €500 million is needed to restore the containment structure.

As reported, on April 26, Ukraine signed an agreement with its partners to open a special account for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The Chernobyl plant was reconnected to the power grid after the blackout.

Russia is attempting to damage Ukrainian nuclear power plants, as evidenced by intelligence data regarding Moscow’s preparations for future attacks.
