The U.S. has decided against deploying Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany – Reuters

The United States has scrapped plans to deploy a battalion equipped with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, with a range of up to 2,500 kilometers, to Germany. This decision is part of Washington’s broader strategy to reduce the U.S. military presence in Germany.

The decision not to deploy the missiles contradicts previous agreements reached in 2024 between then-U.S. President Joe Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Berlin viewed the presence of such weapons as a key element in deterring potential aggression from Russia. It was planned that the unit would begin combat duty by the end of this year, but the White House’s change of course halted this process.

The cancellation of the missile deployment came amid tense relations between the Donald Trump administration and the German government. Experts note that such a move could significantly weaken NATO’s security architecture in Europe and alter the balance of power in the region. So far, Berlin has not provided a detailed comment on the implications of this decision for the country’s defense capabilities. Thus, the strategic plan to strengthen the Alliance’s eastern flank has undergone yet another adjustment.

As a reminder, the Pentagon is withdrawing some U.S. troops from Germany.
