The U.S. will invest more than $4 billion in military bases in Britain

The U.S. will invest more than $4 billion in military bases in Britain

The United States plans to invest more than $4.2 billion in modernizing its military bases in the United Kingdom. Some of the projects involve building new storage facilities for nuclear weapons, as well as upgrading the air base from which American bombers took off to carry out strikes against Iran.

The United States is preparing a large-scale program to modernize its military facilities in the United Kingdom. According to The Guardian, which cites Pentagon documents, $4.2 billion is earmarked for this work. In addition, another $1.3 billion is in the preliminary planning stage. This involves dozens of projects covering the design, construction, and renovation of U.S. military and intelligence facilities. Some of these projects pertain to infrastructure used for covert operations and to support U.S. military units.

One of the most discussed items has been the plans to build new bunkers in Suffolk County. According to the publication, they could be used to store U.S. nuclear weapons. The Pentagon has not officially confirmed this, but documents obtained by journalists point to precisely this purpose for the facilities.

The U.S. plans to pay special attention to the air base in Gloucestershire. It was from there that U.S. strategic bombers took off this year to strike Iranian targets following an order from U.S. President Donald Trump. The base is to undergo modernization to meet current military requirements. The documents also mention another important project. The Pentagon plans to allocate $163 million to upgrade a secret U.S. intelligence base operating in the United Kingdom. Details of this project are not being disclosed due to its classified nature.

According to The Guardian, there are currently more than 12,000 U.S. military personnel stationed in the United Kingdom. They are deployed at at least 15 military bases and other facilities used by the U.S. Armed Forces. This is one of the largest U.S. military presences in Europe. U.S. bases in the United Kingdom have remained an important part of defense cooperation between the two countries for many decades. They are used for training, logistics, aviation operations, intelligence, and support for NATO operations.

At the same time, the issue of the U.S. military presence periodically sparks debate within the United Kingdom itself. Some politicians and civil society activists question the advisability of continuing to host U.S. bases, especially those associated with nuclear weapons.

Despite this, British governments have viewed defense cooperation with the U.S. as one of the key elements of the country’s security for over 70 years. That is why the large-scale program to modernize U.S. infrastructure indicates that Washington continues to count on a long-term military presence in the United Kingdom.

The Pentagon has not yet commented on the details of individual projects. At the same time, documents show that the U.S. continues to actively invest in its European bases amid growing security challenges and a tense international situation, according to The Guardian.

As a reminder, on June 26, global oil prices fell by about 2% due to an increase in the number of tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz

Exports of mineral fertilizers through the Strait of Hormuz have shown rapid growth, bringing supply volumes to the global market back to levels recorded before the military escalation began.

The official reason sounds complicated: “improper organization of primary financial monitoring.” Simply put, the National Bank believes that the companies failed to adequately verify the origin of the funds passing through their terminals.
