US bans imports of new Chinese-made routers over security concerns

Starting March 23, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a ban on importing new consumer routers manufactured abroad, particularly targeting devices from China, which is estimated to control at least 60% of the US market for this equipment. This measure is motivated by serious cybersecurity concerns threatening the integrity of critical US infrastructure.

The ban applies exclusively to new router models, while the usage and import of existing devices will continue. The White House assessment highlighted significant cyber threats stemming from vulnerabilities in foreign-made routers.

The FCC report details that malicious actors exploited these vulnerabilities to attack households, disrupt network operations, conduct espionage, and steal intellectual property. In December, the FCC adopted rules prohibiting the import of all new Chinese router models and is pushing for stronger security regulations.

The FCC is a federal US agency regulating communications, including internet and broadcast sectors. Its decisions have a significant impact on the telecommunications market and the security of the nation’s digital infrastructure.

Overall, the FCC’s decision underscores growing concerns over cybersecurity amid geopolitical tensions and marks a significant step in protecting American consumers and critical network infrastructure from potential threats.

It is expected the ban will prompt importers and manufacturers to seek alternative solutions and enhance the scrutiny of network equipment within the US.
