ECOWAS Court to Hold Conference in Dakar — Premium Times Nigeria
The Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold an international conference from September 21 to 26 in Dakar, Senegal. Participants will discuss key challenges facing the regional judicial body, including the enforcement of its decisions.
Conference topics
The forum is titled “The ECOWAS Court of Justice at a Crossroads: Justice, Innovation, Human Rights Protection and the Future of Regional Integration in West Africa.” According to Premium Times Nigeria, the conference is expected to conclude with practical recommendations and a final document outlining strategic priorities for the future of the court and regional integration.
The thematic sessions will cover human rights jurisprudence, the enforcement of court decisions and compliance with enforcement requirements, artificial intelligence, data protection, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. Participants will also consider a proposal to establish an appellate chamber, as well as issues of environmental justice, refugee protection and forced displacement.

Participants and format
Senior officials from judicial and government bodies of ECOWAS member states, heads of community institutions and national courts, lawyers, academics, representatives of civil society organizations, development partners, international organizations and the media are expected to arrive in Dakar.
The statement noted that the conference will provide a platform to discuss strengthening human rights protection, more effective enforcement of court decisions, digital innovation, environmental and migration challenges, as well as mechanisms for resolving regional commercial disputes. The program includes plenary sessions, expert discussions, round tables and an exhibition.
