June 7 Holiday: All Saints' Sunday and a commemoration of those who left a spiritual legacy

All Saints' Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday after Trinity Sunday, that is, one week after Pentecost, and in 2026 it falls on June 7. It is one of the oldest Christian holidays, commemorating all saints—from the well-known to those whose names remain unknown, but whose spiritual deeds are recognized by the Church.

The holiday originated in the late 4th to early 5th centuries and became the logical conclusion of the great Easter cycle. Its meaning is simple yet profound—to show that all saints came into being through the action of the Holy Spirit, who descended upon the apostles on the day of Pentecost.

All Saints’ Sunday always falls on the first Sunday after Trinity Sunday, which is also called the Descent of the Holy Spirit. That is why the date changes every year and depends on Easter.

This feast seems to conclude the spiritual period that begins with Christ’s Resurrection and passes through the Ascension and the Trinity. The Church emphasizes that holiness is neither a coincidence nor a privilege, but the result of a life lived in faith and grace. The idea behind the holiday is to honor not individual well-known saints, but all of them at once—even those for whom no historical records have survived.

How the holiday originated

The first mentions of All Saints’ Sunday are found in the sermons of John Chrysostom, where he speaks of “all the saints who have suffered throughout the world.” Over time, the tradition became established in the church typikons—the Studite and the Jerusalem—which designated the first Sunday after Pentecost as the day of remembrance for all saints. This decision had a profound symbolic meaning: after the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church, it bore fruit in the form of holy people from various eras.

Who Are All the Saints?

In the Christian tradition, saints include not only canonized individuals but also all the righteous who lived according to the faith and spiritual commandments. The Church classifies saints into so-called “categories”—these include apostles, prophets, martyrs, holy fathers, venerable ones, the righteous, and other groups. Each of these groups symbolizes different paths of spiritual life, but they are all united by a single idea—service to God and people.
