Tinubu extends implementation of 2025 budget’s capital component until the end of 2026 — Premium Times Nigeria
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has signed into law a bill extending the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026. Premium Times Nigeria reports.
Parliament’s decision
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu signed the Fourth Amendment Bill to the 2025 Budget less than a day after it was passed by both chambers of Nigeria’s National Assembly — the Senate and the House of Representatives. Parliament approved the document on September 29, 2026.
The presidential administration said the extension would give ministries, departments and government agencies more time to complete ongoing capital projects. According to Onanuga, this should ensure that already allocated funds are used without interrupting critically important programs.

Fourth extension
This is the fourth extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget. Initially, this period was set to end on December 31, 2025. It was first extended until March 31, 2026, then until June 30, and later until September 30.
Former Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun had previously told the Senate that the government planned to end the practice of extending budget implementation beyond the fiscal year. In December 2025, Tinubu also promised to end the practice of simultaneously implementing several budgets and to settle all capital obligations from previous years by March 31, 2026.
The new decision means that the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget will continue until the end of 2026. The president also thanked the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their prompt consideration of the bill.
