Trump nominates Hung Cao as US Navy Secretary

US President Donald Trump said on September 1 that he is nominating acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao for the position on a permanent basis. Cao has temporarily led the department since John Phelan unexpectedly left the post without explanation at the end of April.

Cao’s service in the Navy

Hung Cao served in the US Navy for 25 years as a special operations officer. He also served alongside SEAL units and special forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Unlike Cao, John Phelan did not serve in the military and had not previously held a civilian leadership position in the US Navy.

Concerns about sailors

Cao’s nomination comes amid concerns that the workload for some sailors may have been excessive during the war with Iran. The Hindu International reported on Trump’s intention to nominate Cao for the permanent position.
