Trump criticizes opponents of data centers in the US

US President Donald Trump criticized opponents of data center development, saying that China would be very pleased by increased resistance to such projects in the United States. He also warned voters that they themselves would bear responsibility if data center development were halted.

As ABC News Australia reports, citing AFP, data centers supporting the development of artificial intelligence have become a prominent issue ahead of important US midterm elections in November. Voters from both parties are expressing dissatisfaction over rising electricity bills and noise from such facilities in residential communities.

Trump's position

In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump said that communities may not want data centers only if they wish to remain backward and poor. He claimed that the development of this infrastructure would provide jobs, lower taxes, and economic success, and also called data centers a golden goose.

According to marketing data cited by US media, candidates in at least 21 races in 18 states aired television advertisements mentioning data centers. Such races were represented almost equally by candidates from both parties.

Competition with China

US media reported on possible attempts by China to increase resistance to data centers in the United States, and one congressional committee demanded an investigation. Trump did not repeat this claim, but said that Beijing would be pleased by the growth of the anti-data-center movement.

According to an estimate cited in the report, China could nearly double the capacity of its data centers over the next five years amid intensifying technological rivalry with the United States in artificial intelligence.
