Trump is demanding written guarantees from Iran regarding its nuclear program

Trump is demanding written guarantees from Iran regarding its nuclear program

U.S. President Donald Trump insists that Iran put its commitments and concessions regarding its nuclear program in writing.

This demand arose during work on a preliminary agreement between Washington and Tehran, which is intended to serve as the basis for further negotiations.

Previously, the Iranian side had provided only verbal assurances of its willingness to fulfill certain conditions related to the nuclear program. At the same time, detailed discussions of specific steps were planned only after the conclusion of the framework agreement and during the preparation of the final treaty.

According to American sources, during a meeting at the White House Situation Room, Trump concluded that verbal guarantees were insufficient. That is why he demanded that Iran commit to specific concessions in writing even at the preliminary agreement stage.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed some of the conditions that Washington expects Tehran to fulfill before moving forward with the negotiations.

“They must commit to very specific negotiations regarding highly enriched uranium—regarding the fate of the highly enriched uranium that remains deep in the mountains. They must agree to strict and long-term restrictions or a halt to uranium enrichment activities in their country,” Rubio stated during a speech before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

According to him, the issue of implementation mechanisms and possible financial incentives for Iran can be agreed upon in subsequent stages of the negotiations.

“For example, they must commit to: ‘We will dispose of enriched uranium.’ And now the question is, ‘What mechanisms will we use to do this?’ That can be discussed,” the secretary of state added.

Over the past few weeks, negotiations between the U.S. and Iran have focused on drafting a framework agreement or a memorandum of understanding.

If signed, the document would extend the ceasefire between the countries, facilitate the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and establish a timeline for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

Last week, the negotiating teams of the two countries agreed on a draft document that could potentially gain the support of both the Trump administration and the Iranian leadership. The draft contained a written commitment from Tehran not to develop nuclear weapons, but did not include specific mechanisms or detailed guarantees.

Iran is currently reviewing the updated demands from the U.S. side. At the same time, participants in the negotiation process are not yet predicting whether Tehran will agree to the proposed terms.

This was reported by ABC News.

The United States has announced the imposition of another round of sanctions against Iran. The restrictions target specific individuals and cryptocurrency exchanges that, according to Washington, are linked to financial schemes benefiting Tehran.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is alive and continues to interact with his inner circle, although he does so cautiously and primarily through written messages and intermediaries. Officials in Washington note that his activity has been increasing recently.
