Trump says the US and Iran held direct contacts at the UN — Euronews
In New York, US President Donald Trump said that representatives of the United States and Iran met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. After his speech, he told journalists that it had been a “very good meeting.” According to Euronews, this is the first confirmed direct contact between Washington and Tehran since the start of the war in February.
Trump’s statements at the General Assembly
During his speech on September 22, Trump said that he could face a major decision in the war with Iran. He said that the United States could reach a deal with Iran that would allow the country to rebuild, or quickly destroy the Islamic Republic.
The US president called on Tehran to fully open the Strait of Hormuz and return to talks to seek a settlement. Trump also claimed that Iran was allegedly delaying an agreement on the strait and ending the war until the US midterm elections. According to him, this would not affect the American approach to the war.

During Trump’s speech, most members of the Iranian delegation left the General Assembly hall.
Possible meeting of the presidents
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told NBC the same day that Trump was ready to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who arrived in New York for the General Assembly. Rubio noted that Trump considers engagement with other parties important for solving problems, although this does not necessarily mean reaching an agreement.
In his speech, Trump also said that high oil prices are a temporary problem and will fall after the war ends.
