British counterterrorism police confirmed that those detained are suspected of preparing a terrorist act. RAF Fairford, where the US Air Force conducts operations, has supported missions against Iran since February amid the broader conflict in the Middle East.
Following warnings from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps regarding US bombers operating from Fairford, protective measures around the facility were strengthened. In July, the United Kingdom said that its armed forces were prepared to defend themselves against a possible response.
