Turkey will conduct oil and gas exploration off the coast of Somalia

Turkey has begun exploration work to search for hydrocarbon deposits in waters off the coast of Somalia

This was reported by the Turkish Ministry of National Defense on social media.

The drilling vessel Çağrı Bey is operating as part of the operation, accompanied by the support ships Korkut, Altan, and Sancar. Units of the Somali Maritime Task Force are also involved, providing patrols and ensuring the safety of the vessels during the expedition.

According to the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, Somali naval forces are providing escort and security during reconnaissance operations to ensure the stability of the operation in the Indian Ocean region.

Separately, it is reported that as part of the cooperation between the countries, the training of Somali cadets is ongoing. They are undergoing basic practical maritime training under the guidance of Turkish instructors.

It is also noted that units of the Somali Maritime Task Force are participating in exercises and providing support to the Turkish mission in the region.

Thus, the operation combines geological exploration for energy resources with the strengthening of naval cooperation between Turkey and Somalia.

As a reminder, in the first four months of 2026, the European Union purchased record volumes of gas from the Russian “Yamal LNG” project, spending nearly €4 billion on it.

Ukraine is preparing to expand natural gas imports from Poland as part of a new joint project. Regulators from both countries have already approved the relevant decisions, which are expected to strengthen energy cooperation.
