851,000 foreigners in Berlin will not vote in the election — The Local Germany
In Berlin, Germany, around 851,000 adult residents will not be able to vote in the state election on Sunday because they do not have a German passport. As The Local Germany reports, approximately 3.9 million people live in the capital, meaning that nearly a quarter of residents will not be eligible to vote in this election.
During the election campaign, housing, transport, and the condition of city streets, parks, and playgrounds are among the issues most frequently raised in conversations with residents. Candidates propose strengthening oversight, involving special waste inspectors, and expanding bulky waste collection services.
A proposal for permanent residents
The Left party, Die Linke, supports granting voting rights to long-term Berlin residents regardless of citizenship. The publication notes that the Green-led administration of the Mitte district previously held a symbolic vote for residents without German citizenship.

Turnout was low, and the results have no legal consequences. Die Linke received 39% of the vote, the Greens 19.5%, the Social Democratic Party of Germany 15.9%, and the Christian Democratic Union 8.5%.
Symbolic youth vote
This week, the results of another symbolic vote were also published, involving nearly 40,000 children and young people under the age of 16. Die Linke received 32.8% of the vote, the Greens 20.9%, the SPD 11.9%, and the CDU 8.3%.
The Animal Protection Party received 7.7%, while the far-right Alternative for Germany received 5.8%. Neither symbolic vote will affect the official results of the state election.
