Large-scale raids targeting organized crime and illegal arms trafficking took place in Berlin
On Wednesday, May 13, law enforcement officials in Berlin carried out a large-scale special operation targeting organized crime and the illegal trafficking of firearms.
This was reported by Spiegel.
According to the publication, police conducted searches of apartments and other premises in various parts of the city. In total, about 20 locations were searched, involving several hundred law enforcement officers.
Nine suspects were detained as part of the operation.
Iris Spranger, Berlin’s Senator for the Interior, noted that special forces had been preparing the operation for several months.
“Anyone who makes our streets dangerous with weapons will feel the full force of the rule of law,” she emphasized.
Law enforcement officials emphasize that the operation is part of a systematic fight against criminal gangs and the rise in street shootings in the city.
As a reminder, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin is convening a cabinet meeting on Sunday, April 12, amid an escalating wave of protests against rising fuel prices. The protests, which began on Tuesday and were accompanied by roadblocks set up with tractors and trucks, brought traffic around Dublin to a standstill.
In the Dutch city of Apeldoorn, riots broke out on the evening of May 5 during a protest against the opening of a temporary migrant shelter in the city. A group of demonstrators set off fireworks and pelted a former school building—where about 240 people are planned to be housed—with eggs.
