Brazil investigates corruption suspicions involving Flávio Bolsonaro

In Brazil, senator and right-wing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has become the subject of an investigation over suspicions of corruption and money laundering linked to the collapsed Banco Master, reports ABC News Australia. The politician said he had “nothing to hide.”

The investigation was opened in July by Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça at the request of the federal police. Details of the proceedings became known after Supreme Court Chief Justice Edson Fachin ordered the declassification of materials related to the Banco Master case. At the same time, part of the proceedings, including details of the investigation involving Bolsonaro, remains classified due to active investigative actions.

Financing of a film about Jair Bolsonaro

The investigation is focused on the financing of the film “Dark Horse” about former president Jair Bolsonaro, the senator’s father. Flávio Bolsonaro acknowledged that he sought financial support for the project from Banco Master owner Daniel Vorcaro, but insists that the financing was entirely legal.

According to a declassified police report, law enforcement officers are examining whether the senator may have been involved in money laundering, illegal currency transactions, and corruption. Police said data seized from Vorcaro’s phone indicate that he transferred about $12 million in 2025 to a U.S. fund linked to Eduardo Bolsonaro, the senator’s brother, who lives in Texas. Investigators are establishing the origin of the funds, the companies through which they may have been transferred, and the final recipients. Flávio Bolsonaro and his brother deny any wrongdoing.

Impact on the presidential election

Information about the investigation was made public several weeks before the presidential election. In it, Flávio Bolsonaro is the main right-wing rival of incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to several polls, they have statistically equal support in a simulated second round.

The Banco Master investigation has also intensified an internal crisis in the Supreme Court. Mendonça previously released documents containing messages that, according to police, Vorcaro sent to Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Moraes accused Mendonça of abusing his authority. Fachin convened a full court session to discuss allegations concerning Moraes’ ties to the banker. Lula supported the declassification of the materials and called for all allegations to be investigated and made public regardless of whom they concern.
