A loud explosion rocked a thermal power plant in Bucharest — HotNews
Late in the evening on April 20, a major incident occurred at the CET Vest thermal power plant, located in the western part of the Romanian capital.
This was reported by HotNews.
Following a loud explosion heard by residents of nearby neighborhoods, a fire broke out at the facility, engulfing a significant portion of the plant.
The emergency was caused by the ignition of approximately 30 tons of oil, which led to the rapid spread of the fire to critical equipment.
According to preliminary data from emergency services, two powerful electrical transformers initially caught fire, but the flames later spread to a third.
Numerous firefighting units were deployed to extinguish the fire, using special foam and water to cool the heated structures.
The main task of the specialists was to prevent the fire from spreading further to other power units of the thermal power plant.
The battle against the fire lasted throughout the night, and it was only by dawn that the situation was partially brought under control.
As of 7:00 a.m., rescue workers had contained the open flames, halting the active phase of the fire that threatened the city’s power grid.
Five fire crews remain on site, cooling the incident area and monitoring the damaged transformers.
Bucharest authorities are currently investigating the exact causes of the oil explosion and assessing the damage caused to the capital’s energy infrastructure.
