In Denmark, natmad is served to guests around midnight
In Denmark, guests at wedding parties and other events may be served natmad—“night food”—around midnight. According to the letter’s author, Gary Calder, this is a friendly signal that the event is coming to an end.
In a letter to The Guardian, Calder pointed out the differences in the names of meals in the Scandinavian countries. In Norway and Sweden, breakfast is called frokost and frukost, respectively, while in Denmark they use the word morgenmad, which means “morning meal.”
In contrast, lunch in Norway and Sweden is called lunsj or lunch, while in Denmark the word frokost is used for it. The main meal in all three countries is called middag, which is associated with the meaning “midday,” although the meal is served in the early evening.

Calder also noted that natmad has a colloquial name: skrub af mad. This expression contains coarse language and refers to the meal served at the end of an event, when it’s time for guests to leave.
In another letter, Dr. Paul Brown described the meal schedule for passengers on the *Titanic*. For first- and second-class passengers, dinner was served in the evening, while third-class passengers had a meal called “dinner” in the middle of the day, followed by tea and a late supper. Brown also noted that iceberg lettuce was not on the menu.
