Two tourists were caught in a severe storm in the Dolomites

Two tourists from the Czech Republic found themselves in danger in the Italian Dolomites after a severe storm with hail broke out in the mountains. The men were unable to safely descend from an altitude of about 3,200 meters, so they called for help. Rescuers reached them by helicopter and transported both men to safety.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 17 on Mount Tofana di Mezzo in the Dolomite Alps. Around 4:30 p.m., the two Czech citizens informed rescuers that they could not continue their descent due to a sudden deterioration in weather conditions. The hikers were at an altitude of approximately 3,200 meters above sea level. They were only a few hundred meters from the nearest cable car, but due to severe weather, continuing their descent had become dangerous.

A storm with hail had begun in the mountains. Under such conditions, even a short section of the route could pose a serious risk to people high up in the mountains. Therefore, the tourists decided not to take any chances and called for help.

Rescuers waited for the weather to improve

Due to the challenging weather conditions, the rescuers also had to proceed with caution. The helicopter was able to fly out to the hikers during a brief lull in the weather. Rescuers retrieved both men from the mountain and transported them to a mountain shelter. Thus, the hikers were successfully evacuated safely. No serious injuries resulting from the incident were reported.

Several Other Incidents Occurred in the Dolomites

Sunday’s inclement weather caused problems not only for the two Czech tourists. Mountain rescue services in the Italian Dolomites also responded to several other calls. Weather conditions in mountainous areas can change rapidly, especially at high altitudes. Heavy rain, hail, wind, or poor visibility can make even a familiar route dangerous in a matter of minutes.

That is why tourists are advised not to push on despite the conditions and to seek help if necessary. In the case of the two Czechs, the decision to stop and call rescuers allowed them to avoid a dangerous descent during the storm. Radio Prague International reports on this.

Italy will continue to screen travelers arriving from Spain until authorities are convinced that the risks associated with illegal migration have passed. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi stated that Rome will not reconsider its decision until at least August 15, and that further action will depend on the situation surrounding the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
